Three Marshalltown Blue Wave swimmers earned medals at the Iowa Games in July and advanced to the State Games of America: Daniel Wright, gold, 50 freestyle and three silvers from the State Games; Connor Cope, silver and four bronze, Iowa Games; and Brian Bacon, bronze, 50 freestyle, State Games.

Pete Peterson who exhibited the Grand Champion 4-H Market Wether at the Iowa State Fair presented the sheep in the Sale of Champions where it brought $2,250.

The Garwin Roughriders rushed past Gladbrook 31-2 in the football season opener as Jerry Rohach passed for 175 yards while MIke Konicek received 128 yards in passes and had four interceptions. On the defensive side Dave Starits and Mike Boege led the attack with 16 and 15 tackles, respectively.

Iowa Central cross country squad led by former Marshalltown High School standout, Stephen Dak, was tied for second place in the nation according to the National Junior College Athletic Association poll.

Central Christian Church youth fellowship class of Joel Harmsen, Eric Osgood, Matt Vitek and Jessica Scarborough, all of Marshalltown, and Melanie Gossett, of State Center, went to Kansas City to visit an emergency shelter and transitional living program.

Mark Halverson ran and passed the LDF football team to a 32-0 season opener over Colfax as Kent Dougherty amassed 119 yards on 13 carries.

MHS girls swim team was ranked No. 1 in the state: the 200 yard freestyle relay team of: Meredith Johnson, Anna Buzbee, Caitlin Stewart and Lauren Mason had the fastest time in the state; the 400 freestyle relay team of Mason, Andrea Duncan, Stewart and Johnson was the second fastest in the event; Johnson ranked second in the 50 freestyle; Mason was third ranked in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle and Duncan was third in the 200 free and 100 butterfly.

South Tama trounced visiting Cedar Rapids LaSalle 19-0 as quarterback Tony DeLancy completed seven of 11 passes for 96 yards and Steve Chyma rushed for 84 yards on 23 carries.

The MHS cross country team tied with host Ames for first at the Little Cyclone Invitational with 55 points each as Sue Eichorn came in fourth; Barb Jay, sixth and Denise Leavy 10th.

The catchers on the T-R All Area softball team were a strong group led by Player of the Year Nicole Fisher. of BCLUW. Other catchers on the list were: Hannah West, of MHS; Angie Mullenbach, of East Marshall; Katie Clement, of West Marshall; Mary Fowler, of Green Mountain-Garwin; and Krista Pettit, of Grundy Center.

The Marshalltown Community College soccer squad ranked sixth in the nation came back from a lackluster first half to defeat Iowa Central Community College as goals by Juliano Olieveira, Julian Castaneda and Joao Vieira sparked the squad.

Kay Clampitt assisted Alan McDonald, 7, Heather Mann, 6, and Addie Cook, 2, with a spin art project at the New Providence Center for the Arts Fall Festival.

A student at MHS, Paul Bundy, and an LDF student, Kevin Koepnick, were named semifinalists in the 23rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Chris Allen was one of the first players to touch the “Victory Bell” after helping Gladbrook-Reinbeck defeat long-standing rival Grundy Center 35-15 as Allen hauled in a 25-yard touch down pass in the first quarter and his 47 yard punt return for a touch down capped the night.

Sarah Boyle, 11, of Conrad, cuddled with her cat Ringo after he was named a finalist in the Iowa Lottery’s Fat Cat Look-alike contest.

The NESCO girls edged Hubbard 4-1 in softball as Pam Nelson had two singles and Brenda Jacobson added a triple in the win.

Marshall County 4-H staff member helped 4-H’ers Matt Paar, Mary Kate Maher and Olivia Smith at the Junior Conservationist Adventure Camp.

The Bobcat volleyball squad came back after dropping the first two matches to defeat Fort Dodge 15-11, 15-10 and 15-7 as Lisa Brockman served 36-of-37 with six aces and Jaimie Deibert went 21-of-22 serves and Jenni Schmidt spiked 31-of-38 and recorded 11 kills.

The Bobcat girl swimmers defeated East Waterloo 114-58 as the 400 yard freestyle relay of Cindy Whitehill, Leslie Lytle, Becky Trottman and Deb Wuest tied the school record and Beth Klinkefus set a new diving record with 182.96 points.
