Nine Marshalltown High School students earned All-State music honors: Josh Atcher and Eliza Smith, All State Choir; Kristin Conrad, All State Orchestra with Tara Ohrt, Alternate; Daniel Lee, Philip Kuhlman, Katelyn Metzger, Brandon Baker and Ryan Baker, All State Band.

Pupils of the Central Iowa Federated Piano Teachers provided entertainment on Halloween at the Villa del Sol: Julie Burg, Jenny Burg, Christin Jensen, Annie Marie Kimberly, Stephanie Baker, Bob Grabe, Katie Miller, Haley Miller, Beth Kremer, Selena Diggins, Deann Tomlinson, Mark Odor and Lisa Odor.

MHS defeated West Waterloo 14-0 as Emmett Huston blasted off for an 86-yard run for one of the touchdowns finishing with 175 yards on 17 carries which earned the Bobcats a Class 4A football playoff berth.

The Bobcat volleyball squad upset third ranked Ames in a hard fought Five-game battle 13-25, 25-23, 9-25, 25-20 and 22-20 as Emily Smid had a match high 36 digs, Tahler Johnston recorded 19 kills and seven blocks and to cap the night off Alison Vandergrift used her 12th kill to take MHS to the state volleyball tournament.

Ten MHS students were selected for the All-State Festival in music: Andy Griffin, Anne Ford, Amy Bradbury, Allison Erion, Emily Reese, Mary Yokum, Tony Braack, Jason Faas, Matt Gieselman and Jeremy Huss.

The final meet of the regular season saw MHS gymnasts defeat Waverly-Shell Rock 115.25-105.8 as senior Jeff Stichter broke the school record for All Around point total with 45.1 points as he won five first place finishes: floor exercise, pommel horse, vaulting, parallel bars and high bar.

Captain America-Elijah Roush, Flash-Sam Roush and Owen Collins as a pumpkin participated in the Marshalltown Public Library’s Storytime Costume Parade.

The 10th-ranked Mustangs of East Marshall clinched a Class 2A State Playoff berth in the 14-7 win over North Polk as the passing duo of Josh Dunham and Dan Berggren resulted in the two Mustang touchdowns.

The combination of speed and power led Wellsburg running back Dick Okones to rush for 1,304 yards on 170 carries for 18 touchdowns over the season and won him Area Player of the Week honors.

South Tama used two second half interceptions by Adam Shortley and Jesse Wedmore for the 21-19 victory over Clear Lake in the Class 3A state football playoffs.

It was a good way to close out the 1992 cross country season as the MHS boys and girls captured the third place trophy and title in the Class 3A State Cross Country meet with Charlie Kelly coming in first for the MHS boys and Michelle Peter finishing first for the MHS girls.

Bobcat awards for the week went to Emmett Huston on offense; Mike Mann on defense and the Sweatknocker award went to Mike Jenkins for the hit he made on the Marshalltown kickoff against West Waterloo.

The MHS girls’ swim team romped through the competition at the district swim meet scoring a total 322 points, 100 points ahead of second place as the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Tara Sondall, Shelley Stanley, Heather Rouse and Katie Bloom set a new pool record.

The Marshalltown Community College fall theatrical production of “Antigone” starred Judy Staahl Antigone; Sandy Smith as Ismene and Matt Karl as the tyrant King Creon.

MHS girls’ swim team bombarded the school record book taking down six records in its second place finish at the State Swimming & Diving Meet as Lauren Mason broke the 200 freestyle record; Meredith Johnson, 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle; Andrea Duncan, 100 butterfly; Kelsey Meyer-Davis, 100 breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lora Collison, Meyer-Davis, Duncan and Anna Buzbee.

Patrick Beane, 1991 graduate of LDF-SEMCO High School, qualified for the Iowa State University Karate Club’s National Collegiate Tae Kwon Do Association team as a first degree brown belt.

Nine students from EXCEL Alternative High School faced tough challenges at the overnight retreat at Camp Mitigwa’s Challenge Course: Drema Durnin, Geoff Kacer, Joshua Sprague, Matt Kriegel, Johan Newberg, Missy Duden, Marlena Charmeska, Lisa Cerda and Angelo Greenwood.
