GMG boys golf squad claimed top honors with a 173 score at its home triangular against Northeast Hamilton and North Tama as Todd led the Wolverines with runner-up medalist honors and a score of 40.

The MHS girls golf team defeated the wind and Johnston, 190-210, as Emily Allison headed the closely knit pack with a 46 for medalist honors.

Miller Middle School eighth and sixth grade Math Bee winners that moved on to the state competition were: John Burns, Lindsey Kosinski, Tim Rash, Suzanne Hill and Jason Jones; for the sixth grade: Doug Cox, Scott Martin, Mike Tetzloff, Todd Roush and Connor Reynolds.

MHS made it the second consecutive Hi-Covey meet win as the ‘Cats amassed seven first place finishes with Mike Jorgensen leading the way besting his own 200-meter dash record as Tim Brennecke took first in the 400 meters and Dean Fogarty added two more firsts in the 400-meter low hurdles and then165 lows.

MHS students Tania Fonseca, Kelsey Beurskens and Kelsey Ambler tended to the plants in the MHS greenhouse as they prepared for the annual MHS plant sale.

MHS girls track stars ranked in the top 10 in the state were: Michelle Duder, fifth in the 400-meter dash; Angie Sommerlot, seventh in the 100 hurdles and Dena Stone, 10th in the 100 hurdles.

The MHS girls track team secured three top finishes as Pat Fischer won the 220-yard dash, Karen Clark the 100 meter hurdles and Denise Leavy the 220 yard hurdles as the team fell three points short of winning the Benton Community meet.

Dean Bright, of rural Steamboat Rock, and Larry Bumsted, of rural Conrad, were named to the second team of the Second All-American Trap Shooting Team as chosen by the editors of “Trap and Field” magazine.

Joel Conrad and Josh Atcher, both of MHS, along with James Gummert, of East Marshall, were selected to join the Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Band, a select Iowa touring ensemble that performed more than 30 shows during the summer.

Shannon Fagerlund, MHS senior, was named a Distinguished Scholar for Central College Class of 1997 with her scholarship renewable for all four years.

Thomas Shrader was chosen as one of 25 Iowa State University students to serve as 1978 Cyclone Aides during the summer and fall orientation programs.

The Marshalltown Community College Tigers softball team led by Kendra Markle swept Ellsworth Community College 8-0 in the opener and 12-8 in the nightcap.

In their first dual of the season, the MHS boys’ tennis team defeated Urbandale 6-5 as they were led by Dave Bower’s 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 win and Chad Blink’s 6-3, 6-3 victory in the singles matches.
