Chief Tupper speaks to Morning Optimists
The Morning Optimist Club of Marshalltown held its weekly meeting Tuesday at the Hy-Vee Dining Room. President John Hall opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and an invocation.
Guest Mark Rohde, Lieutenant Governor for Zone 7 of the Iowa Optimist District, updated the group on the recently-held Junior Golf Tournament in Iowa. Thirteen young golfers from Iowa will move on to the OI International Junior Golf Tournament in Florida this summer. Rohde promoted the District Convention, which will be held in Burlington from Aug. 1 to 3.
David Hicks, July Program Chair, introduced Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper as the guest speaker for the day. Tupper related that he and his family have enjoyed calling Marshalltown home for the past three years since he began serving in his current position. Since he has been police chief, he has emphasized his belief that the police department belongs to the people living in the community, and it must be the people who help the department do their jobs by being vigilant about what is going on, and offering ideas and support for the peace officers. Tupper also believes in open communication and building partnerships with groups in the community. He would like to see more neighborhoods organize Neighborhood Watch programs, by contacting the police department for assistance.
Tupper addressed a question about the possibility of building a new structure for the Police Department. He emphasized that the need has been there for a long time. There is two million dollars’ worth of equipment in the current facility’s basement that floods often. In addition, there just isn’t sufficient space for the daily operations of the department. He is optimistic that steps will be taken to bring a bond issue up to the vote of the community.
Hall closed the meeting by leading the recitation of the Optimist Creed. The Morning Optimist Club of Marshalltown meets at 6:30 A.M. Tuesdays at the Hy-Vee Dining Room. Guests are welcome. The club’s website is at www.morningoptimists.org.
