VFW Auxiliary prepares for garage sale
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary to Post 839 met on Tuesday. The meeting started at 6:30 p.m. with nine present. Tucker Schiebel’s Patriotic Art picture was displayed.
Linda Tasler, president, conducted the meeting according to the ritual. General Orders were read, Pledge of Allegiance recited, minutes of May l6 meeting were read and approved and the treasurer’s report was read and filed subject to audit.
Correspondence was read from the Lurvey family, Baltisberger family and Camp courageous. Coupons were delivered to CIRSI: 12,058. The money march was conducted and the prayer for the VFW National Home For Children was recited.
There will be Department VFW Auxiliary Bingo on June 23 at the Iowa Veterans Home. Volunteers are needed to help residents with their cards. There is also Post Bingo on the third Monday of every month, volunteers are needed.
The State of Iowa Department Meeting was held the first weekend in June in Waterloo. Awards won by 839 were Veterans and Family Support Certificate and money; Best promotion of the Creative Patriotic Art, certificate only; Runner up to the best overall Americanism Program, certificate and money; Best POW/MIA Program for Americanism, certificate and money.
The Charter was draped in honor of Barbara Baltisberger who went to her heavenly home on May 13.
Virginia Johnson reminded the group that there will be a Standdown for the Homeless at the old Des Moines General Hospital on Sept. 15-17. There was a bill presented nationally to take away injured veterans disability payments — thank the Lord didn’t pass.
Johnson also told us that the Post is having a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 29. Bring donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 19 and 20 from 4-8 p.m. on July 27. The Auxiliary will be selling coffee and rolls plus a bake sale at the garage sale.
For the good of the organization Tasler read an article “A War Horse.” The meeting closed according to the ritual. Next meeting will be July 18 at 6:30 p.m.
