TIMES-REPUBLICAN

LAUREL — The Harold McBroom American Legion Auxiliary #635 met July 18 at the post home, with President Laura Tribby opening in forum. Chaplain Betty Nikkel opened in prayer. The Unit recited the pledge to the U.S. flag, stood in silence for POW/MIA and deceased veterans followed by singing “My Country Tis of Thee” and reciting the Preamble to the constitution. Roll call was answered by seven members.

Bob Brown of “Iowa Outlaws BBQ” is going to serve a community supper for benefit of the American Legion and Auxiliary from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 6.

The minutes were read and approved as corrected. The treasure’s report was given with one bill presented for coffee donated to VA medical office for June and July. The new metal roof is on the Legion building made possible by all the donors and community contributions.

LaDonna Runner, Third District president, reported on the Department convention held in Cedar Rapids. There were 181 in attendance. The Third District was in first place for membership at end of year. There were 11,500 poppies ordered to be distributed for Memorial Day. There are only five veterans at Iowa Veterans Home able to make poppies and veterans in South Dakota and Oregon will be helping make poppies for Dist. 2, 3 and 4 next year. Sad to hear we had 104 deceased Auxiliary members this year. There were 366 volunteers that helped at the IVH throughout the year.

Marshall County President Pat Williams will hold the Marshall County Leadership meeting Aug. 18, place to be announced. Third Dist. President Runner will be attending the national convention in Minneapolis, Minn., on Aug. 24-30. Betty Nikkei and Betty Coulthard volunteered to fill chairman positions and report on Americanism and Legislation. The Laurel Unit will host the Marshall County conference Sept. 15 at Post home, with registration at 8 a.m., convene at 9 a.m. and also have silent auction. Lucille Buffington and Rhea Osland volunteered to audit treasurer books in August.

The August meeting will be canceled due to many people being at fair. Next meeting will be Sept. 19 at Post Home. Runner motioned to adjourn, second by Sue Garrels, motioned carried. Chaplain closed in prayer. Hostess Coulthard served lunch.
