Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon’s scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America’s history, died at the age of 93.

Ed Henze, formerly of Albion, was in charge of the paint shop of Walt Disney-Jim Henson Production where the TV show “Dinosaurs” is filmed. It was Henze’s job to paint all the initial characters in the “Dinosaur” family.

MHS band members Mindy Vana and Alan Sheldon helped band director Jerry Ellingson load one of the five charter buses for the trip to the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas, Texas.

Main Street Dance Theater Inc. participated in the Younkers Community Day Sale with prizes awarded to the top coupon book sales: Sydnie Wohlert, first place; Rachel Heatwole, second; and Tiana Bolar, with the MSDT the beneficiary of more than $1,000 and the production of “The Nutcracker.”

Al Wuster, of McCallsburg, and Glenn Johnson, of Marshalltown, spent some time ice fishing in a Marshall County pond when Wuster pulled out a lunker large mouth bass close to 6 pounds. Both men were students at the University of Iowa.

Anne Gogerty, of Hubbard, a 1988 Colo-NESCO graduate and a student at Loras College, was among 25 Loras students named as National Outstanding Leaders in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Tracy Knight and Robin Kramer were named the 1977 King and Queen of homecoming at Steamboat Rock School. Other members of the Court were: Tim Bulter, Dan Gast, Brenda Rotgers and Teresa Rash.

Michele Mulinix, 11, stayed awake rocking with 69 other rockers in the 24-hour Rockathon to raise money for new uniform and equipment for the Central Iowa Eye Opener Drum & Bugle Corps at the Marshalltown Mall.

The Iowa Hawkeye football team battled the Brigham Young Cougars to a 13-13 tie in the Holiday Bowl.

Darlene Varnum, 16, of Colo, was named the first place winner in her age division for District 5 in the Make It With Wool contest. Varnum made a gray jacket, coordinating plaid vest and slacks all from wool.
