West Marshall’s Mike Bear was crowned the 145 pound champion to highlight the West Marshall wrestling team’s trip to the Perry Invitational.

A big second half spurred the Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines ahead as they defeated Allison-Bristow 69-53 with Angie Sandquist sinking 39 points and Jessica Welton 18 as Jami Hartwig led the guard court with five rebounds, three steals and four block shots.

The Marshalltown High School boys’ basketball team successfully downed Central Waterloo 74-54 as Jeff Isgrig led all scoring with 20 points and Dan Linke and Jim Geiger each added 17 all the while watching as Cedar Falls was upset giving the ‘Cats sole possession of first place in the Big 8 Conference.

The T-R All-Area Football Player of the Year was Tyler Rabey, of West Marshall. The 6 foot, 157 pound Trojan standout was one of the top kickers in the state in addition to contributing 15 touchdowns, coming in four different ways.

Dustyn Kothenbeutal was crowned the Miller Middle School Spelling Bee champion and Ben Morris the runner-up advancing both to the AEA 6 Spelling Bee.

Diane Heckman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Heckman, was installed as worthy advisor of Marshalltown Assembly No. 103, Order of Rainbow for Girls.

Balance was the key to the 69-49 win over Dike-New Hartford by East Marshall as Rob Paxton scored a game high 19 points, Trent Mullikin added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Walker Seim chipped in 13 points and eight board.

LDF-SEMCO seniors Patricio Aguilera, Dan Black, Kurt Lyle and Kara Shultz were among the 1,382 students from 320 schools in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois which participated in the Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College in Decorah.

Debbie Kvinlaug, of Gilman and a senior at SEMCO, prepared her mime make-up for dress rehearsal before her speech coach for the mime routine, “That’s a Horse of a Different Color” to be performed at the district large group speech contest.

Kody Waldstein, of Dike, successfully completed a 10-day Naval Sea Cadet recruit training boot camp at Camp Dodge and distinguished himself by being the platoon guidon bearer and earning the “Honor Cadet” award.

The MHS boys’ basketball team downed Newton 60-47 as Austin Richardson led the offense with 23 points followed by Greg Roush’s 12 points and Scott Thiessen’s 10 points.

Talana Gorsuch, 7, Andrea Hoelscher, 8, and Mark Benzer, 7, displayed a picture of Jimmy Carter, an autographed picture of Cher and a magazine from President Ford following personal letters sent to each celebrity by the children as part of a letter writing class project.

Le Grand native Brock Seim poured in 32 points to help nationally ranked Dakota Wesleyan University to a 96-73 victory over Dordt College and reached the 1,000-point plateau in only 45 games, the fastest in DWU history.

The MHS matmen won three of five dual meets in the Marshalltown Dual Meet Tournament besting Council Bluffs Central Lewis 50-15, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 52-12 and Davenport North 48-21 as senior Danny Lovell and junior Chad Schafer led the ‘Cats going 5-0 for the tournament.

With four girls in double figures: Kim Gibbs, Janine Buresh, Beth Karsjens and Annie McFadden who led all scorers with 32 points, the MHS girls’ basketball team defeated Green Mountain 86-54.

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team held off Hubbard-Radcliffe for its sixth straight win 47-42 as Allison Volkens led the Rebels with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Abby Johnson added 12 points and Alexa Krull finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Cathy Sevick Rush was awarded a $300 Louise Noun Scholarship for the dental hygiene program at Des Moines Area Community College.

Ten of Colo-NESCO’s 11 boys’ basketball players scored as the Royals outscored Woodward-Granger 78-55 as Chandler Eley led the Royals with a double double of 24 points and 11 rebounds and Adam Bell added 16 points.

The LDF-SEMCO Warhawks rolled up 177 points in the Gladbrook-Reinbeck wrestling tournament to take the crown as Charlie Beach led the Warhawks running his record to 19-0 in the 119 pound class.

Gail McRill, of Albion, and a sophomore at Cornell College, was cast as a jury member in the Cornell operatic production of “Trial By Jury,” by Gilbert and Sullivan.
