The Marshalltown Apgar Attitude 16 and under AAU volleyball team of: Jess Stultz, Courtney Moore, Danielle Eberline, Alex Minchich, Rosie Perales, Kalli Hannam, Shelby Olson and Shanae Quigley were runner-up winners at the Iowa Sports Foundation NetFest.

A big fourth quarter boosted the West Marshall boys’ basketball team to an 80-70 Heart of Iowa Conference win over Madrid as Jamie Zeller had a hot hand with 22 points, Shannon Phillips added 20 points and Troy Clark dropped in 16.

The Marshalltown High School boys battled the Ames Little Cyclones through overtime and came out victorious 63-61 through the rebounding efforts of Perry Meyer, Mike Zier and Dan Linke.

The Waters at Des Moines Roosevelt were choppy but the MHS boys’ swim team outlasted the Roughriders to win 88-82 as the 200 medley relay team of Aaron Loupee, Darren Bacon, Aaron Gervich and Daniel Wright captured the first race win while Zach Johnson scored a pair of wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle and Loupee won the 100 freestyle, Wright the 50 freestyle and Gervich the 100 yard butterfly.

The Warhawk matmen defeated Ackley-Geneva 34-29 and routed Alden 51-17 with Brian Ash, Charlie Beach and Eric Burchland leading the LDF-SEMCO wrestlers.

MHS sophomore Jim McGregor and seniors Marc Chandler and Lisa Thompson assisted fellow students during the registration process for the spring classes at MHS.

It was lucky No. 13 for the Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines as they defeated North Tama 55-27 with Nicki Landt leading the offensive scoring with 16 points and Kacie Mathern adding 13 points and six steals.

MHS wrestlers Jamie Strickler and Chad Schafer pushed the matmen over the top with their victories as the Bobcats defeated Ankeny 30-27.

Paul Campbell and Jeff Lundgren took advantage of the snow on the St. Henry’s slope to practice their sledding techniques.

The MHS wrestlers ended Waukee’s winning streak as they came back from a scoring deficit to win 37-27 when the ‘Cats rattled off the last four matches to secure the victory beginning with a win from Anthony Baccam, then Daniel Martinez, Gustavo Martinez and ending with Matt Keith.

Greg Grisham was crowned the 1992 Aaron Spelling Bee champion and Gary Niedermann came in second place.

The LDF theater group of: Brad Grossman, Kris Kellogg, Kevin Koepnick, Randy Mehlert, Joey Marty and Margaret Steward earned a Division I rating at district speech contest and advanced to the state competition in Muscatine.

The West Marshall matmen demolished Colfax-Mingo 50-24 as Keith White, Matt Hemesath, Matt Bryant and Austin Nichols all pinned their opponents.

No. 11th ranked Hubbard-Radcliffe girls improved to 12-0 with the 79-64 victory over Grundy Center as Lisa Brinkmeyer led the Rebels with 45 points as Sally Wykle and Kristie Mannetter both added 16.

The MHS tankers swept Dowling and Waterloo Central 58-25 and 51-31, respectively, as new school records were set by Mark Wuest in the 100 yard butterfly and Steve Robbins in the 500 yard freestyle.

The East Marshall girls’ basketball team led by Vanessa Clemens career-high 30 points defeated Eldora-New Providence 70-38.

The Marshalltown Community College Tiger men downed Iowa Western of Clarinda 90-73 as five players scored in double figures: Eric Evans, Jeremy Park, Jeff Allen, Troy Cavil and Kevin Rabbitt.

Third District Congressman Charles Grassley nominated Matthew R. McCright, 17, to the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and Todd Farrell, 17, to the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. Other area nominees were: Michael Sutten, 18, of State Center, Military Academy at West Point; Kirk Jensen, 18, of Reinbeck, Military Academy at West Point; David Lutes, of Gilman, Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Eugene Stone, 18, Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y.

Stewart Photography, of Montour, and owner Bryan Stewart collected the highest national honor in the 2006 Tiny Tots and Big Kids Shots Contest sponsored by McKenna Professional Imaging of Waterloo. The grand prize went to Rylie McMullen, of Marshalltown. She and her family were awarded a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The four winners of the Iowa Valley Spelling Bee held at MCC were: Christina Vos, of Wellsburg, Timothy Christian School, first; Ben Morris, Miller Middle School, second; Lacey Schmidt, of Montezuma, Montezuma Middle School, third; and Meredith Harris, Riverbend Middle School, of Iowa Falls, fourth. All advanced to the State Bee.
