Marshalltown High School student Stephen Frese participated in the summit of Iowa lawmakers and high school students which took part in the World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan International Internship program. Frese completed his internship last summer in Beijing, China at the Academy of Ag Sciences.

A pair of balanced scoring attacks led West Marshall to two victories against Roland-Story as the girls led by Justean Bohnsack and Lisa Zeller finished with 24 points each in the 61-50 win and the boys were victorious 62-57 as Shannon Phillips and Troy Clark led the boys’ offense with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

MHS wrestlers won their sixth straight dual meet defeating Newton 35-15 as they won nine of the 12 matches.

The Marshalltown Community College mens’ basketball team defeated St. Ambrose junior varsity 84-67 as Da Shawn Wright dropped in 17 points, Kenard Moore added 15 and Tony Hauger finished with 11 points.

MHS senior football player Jason Perry was one of 29 players selected to the Class 4A Academic All-State Football team.

The Union-Whitten girls set their record at 15-1 following the 84-65 victory over New Providence with Cindy Callaway leading the offense with 40 points.

The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys basketball team made it the “Perfect” season as they drove their record to 12-0 with the 62-50 victory over Grundy Center as Brett Bengen and Scott Benson led the offensive attack with 20 and 11 points, respectively.

MHS and LDF-SEMCO students were chosen to participate in the Cyclone Honor Band. Cardinal Band members from MHS were: Halari Brown, Emily Reese, Lee Williams; LDF-SEMCO were: Jodi Andresen and Manon Bryant; Gold Band members for MHS were: Sue Blair, Jason Faas, Stephanie Kennedy, Joey Kosinski and Marci Thomas; LDF-SEMCO band members were: Jennie Williams and Dan Black.

The Colo-Nesco girls made short work of defeating the Ogden girls 113-53 with four girls in double figures: Missy Miller led the group with 44 points, Kris Wildeboer added 28 points, Jackie Riese finished with 18 points and Liz Anderson dropped in 15.

The MCC Tigers mens’ basketball team led by John Hlas’ 20 points downed Kirkwood Community College 66-57 as Tiger Curley Harris finished with 15 points, James Harris, 13, and Dean Aldrich added 11.

West Marshall finished its dual wrestling season with a victory over CMB-CN 44-36 as Justin Toyne and Pat Pfantz went 2-0 and Sam Bryant, Clint Hilleman and Logan Krough each recorded pins.

Waldorf College tried a slow down tempo, but the MCC mens’ basketball squad ended the game in the win column with a score of 68-51 as Jeff Allen had a game-high 26 points.

The MHS girls’ basketball team led offensively by Anne McFadden’s 33 points, Janine Buresh’s 22 points and Kim Gibbs’ 11 points defeated Grinnell 74-52.

Trent Mullikin’s double-double helped lead East Marshall boys past AGWSR 66-59 as Mullikin scored 21 points and had 11 rebound with five steals; Walker Seim added 17 points and seven rebounds and Nick Diers finished with 14 points.

Art work by four LDF-SEMCO students: Christy Hofer, Jake Neipert, Becky Humphrey and Jennifer Johnson were selected for display and won honorable mention awards at the Regional Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition at the Octagon Center in Ames.

Dean Aldrich, a student at MCC, proved to be as good off the court as on when he slurped up 27.5 scoops of ice cream to take first place in the MCC Ice Cream Eating Contest.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls basketball team closed out the regular season with a 79-15 victory over North Tama taking their record to 14-7 as Allison Volkens led the Rebels with 32 points and 12 rebounds, Alexa Krull added 19 points and Abby Johnson rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.

Aspiring Eagle Scouts from Le Grand: Mark Bjelland, 14, Terry Ross, 13, and John Clingerman adopted filling the shed at the community building with firewood that they cut and hauled themselves for use in the building’s rustic fireplace.
