Senior Brett Rosedale and freshman Sam Upah led the EM/GMG wrestlers to a sectional win and advanced them to the dual team regionals against La Porte City Union.

John Gage’s 20 foot jumper at the buzzer upset sixth ranked NU High boys 55-54 as the Comets were paced by Tony Rainsbarger’s 17 points and eight rebounds and Ryan Boswell’s 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

Ken Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson, and Brad Robertson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Robertson, practiced, during the dress rehearsal, for their performance of “Classical Cluck,” a popular recording of the day, for the Franklin PTA talent show. Both boys were dressed as giant chickens, costumes made by their mothers.

The Colo-NESCO Royals girls basketball team defeated Madrid 65-27 for a third time of 38 or more points deficit this season in district semi-final play as senior Andrea Markey led the offense with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Two Marshalltown seniors, Eric Saylor and Jason Perry, were among 15 students to receive the prestigious Presidential Scholar Award from the University of Northern Iowa.

Marshalltown High School senior Kevin Hemphill concluded his Big Eight Conference career by capturing first place in the 100-yard breaststroke at the conference swim meet at Waterloo Central.

MHS students selected to perform in the Symphony Band at the Northern Festival of Bands & Conductors were: Linda Blair, Sue, Blair, Michelle Brown, Geoff Brown, Eric Bryant and Jason Faas and in the Concert Band: Hilari Brown, Beth Carlton, Jonathan Jero and Emily Reese.

The Bobcat girls basketball team romped past New Providence 84-57 with three players in double figures: Anne McFadden topped all scorers with 51 points; Janine Buresh added 15 and Kim Gibbs finished with 12 points to advance to the sectional semi-final game.

GMG girls basketball squad stomped Walnut Ridge 64-35 in the Class 1A Region 6 District semifinal as Kacie Mathern led the Wolverines with 20 points and Cory Bacon added 17 points and four steals.

The Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines took the Parkersburg Crusaders for a 87-71 loss as Angie Sandquist and Mary Langenbau combined for a total of 63 points, 39 points and 27 respectively, to lead the Wolverines.

The South Tama girls rallied from a 10 point deficit in the Tama Girls Sectional Tournament to defeat LDF 87-85 with Lori Horbach and Kim Kajer leading the Trojan scoring with 29 points each as Roberta Fetter finished with 19 points.

Marshalltown student Stephen Frese was honored in the Iowa House for his contributions to researching and writing about the history of the State of Iowa and its people.

MHS senior August Stofferahn qualified for national competition in two forensic events, Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Extemporaneous Speaking and represented Eastern Iowa Forensic League.

• 40 years ago in 1977

Three spellers advanced to the Area VI competition: Terri Breed, 7th grade Miller Junior High; Todd Doyle, 7th grade Lenihan and Martha Lake, Miller 8th grader. Each winner received a trophy and 15 silver dollars.

The BCLUW boys basketball team earned a 57-44 victory over GMG with Matt Erwin and Luke Higgins leading the offense with 20 points and 14 points and five rebounds, respectively.

West Marshall’s Bryce Dee pinned Roland-Story’s Brian Bohner in the 189-pound championship which helped the Trojans win the sectional wrestling team championship. Others crowned as champs for West Marshall were: Walter Buck (103 pounds), Jesse Nason, (130 pounds), Dustin Haney (135 pounds), Chris Juel (145 pounds) and Cory Eldridge (171 pounds).

Earning to ratings at the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group Contest from MHS were: Dustin Etter, Pat Cahill, Steven Bromley, Daniel Crupi, Michelle Cartier, Katie Harris, Brandon Barnes, Sarah Ellefson, Eliza Smith, Nicole Stultz, Samantha Gill and Korey Bachman.

The top-ranked Colo-NESCO girls rolled to an 83-21 smashing of Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in sectional tournament play as Kris Wildeboar led the Royals with 26 points followed by Missy Miller’s 16 (all well suffering from mononucleosis), Liz Anderson’s 13 points and Emilie Fredregill’s 12 points.
