Three Marshalltown High School students delivered papers at the Iowa Junior Science and Humanities Symposium at the University of Iowa: Marci Thomas’ “Validity and Reliability of Thermogravimetric Analysis for Determining Carbonate Impurities,” Eric Berggren’s “A Comparison of Nitrate Use By Different Parent Stock of Zea Mays” and Sarah Renze’s “The Effect of Crude Oil on Daphnia Magna.”

Vicki Ward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ward, was installed as the president of the 7th Y-Teens for the 1977-78 year in a candlelight ceremony.

No. 2 ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys basketball team made it an easy 22 wins for the season as they defeated Aplington-Parkersburg 63-49 in the Class 2-A District 6 opener with Brett Bengen and Tyson Dirks leading the scorers with 22 and 21, respectively.

One night after her brother poured in 30 points for Green Mountain-Garwin, sophomore Mary Langenbau exploded for a career-high 55 points and led the GM-G girls to a 89-77 upset over Gladbrook-Reinbeck at the Class 1A sectional final.

MHS girls defeated Ackley-Geneva 54-45 and advanced to the district final against Wellsburg as Anne McFadden led all scorers with 41 points and Lisa Sudenga, Ann Hayes and Judy Nieman led the defense at the boards with five rebounds each.

Thirteen LDF-SEMCO boys hit the scorebook in the 76-60 victory over BCL-U-W as Josh Dunham and Dan Berggren paced the Warhawks with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

West Marshall boys basketball team surged back from a 14-point half time deficit to defeat North Polk 60-51 and advanced to the Class 2A District 13 finals as Adam Carr and Jon Carsten led the offensive comeback with 19 and 12 points, respectively.

All-state forward Lisa Brinkmeyer dropped in 50 points to lead Hubbard-Radcliffe to a 91-57 won over GMG in the district tournament opener.

The Grundy Center Spartans could not be contained as they defeated the Steamboat Rock Rockets 108-58 in the Class A Sectional basketball game with five Spartans in double figures: Tim clark, 25; Rick Venenga, 16; Kent Hitchings and Jeff Crisman, 12 each and Tom Riek, finished with 10.

MHS nationally ranked 125 pound wrestler Anthony Baccam defeated Matt Kittleson, of Waverly-Shell Rock, and advanced to the title match at the State Wrestling Tournament.

Under adverse conditions, BCL-U-W senior forward Toby Rainsbarger turned in a tremendous effort with 24 points to lead his Comets to a 55-29 win over West Marshall in the first round Class 1A district tournament game.

The MHS feedoff from Kim Gibbs to Anne McFadden with 14 seconds left in the game and the made bucket gave the Bobcat girls a 67-65 final over Wellsburg to send them against rated Dysert-Geneseo and a chance for the “Sweet 16” in Des Moines.

The winningest wrestler in East Marshall/Green Mountain-Garwin history, Brett Rosedale, finished for the fourth consecutive year with a Top-four, third place title in the Class 2-A 152 pound class and a 174-7 career record, 106 of those wins by pin.

GMG followed the lead of its two big men Jay Langenbau and Tony Becker as they rolled over Walnut Ridge Baptist 80-69 in the District 6 first game. Langenbau had 32 points and 11 rebounds while Becker finished with 18 points and nine boards.

Paul Sietmann, sophomore at MHS, completed all the badge and activity requirements, worked at Iowa Veterans Home as his project and received his Eagle Scout rank at a ceremony in the First United Methodist Church.
