Two Marshalltown High School matmen earned first place finishes as five Bobcat wrestlers competed in the CIML Iowa Conference junior varsity tournament. Senior Tyler Vopava and freshman Ivan Rodriguez both went 3-0 on their way to conference titles.

The LDF-SEMCO boys used the overtime period to put away Allison-Bristow 78-73 as Zak Dolash and Josh Dunham used 17 points each to lead the offense.

Reserve forward Stan Sturtz canned both ends of a one-and-one free throw situation with exactly 1:00 showing on the game clock to give MHS a nerve-racking 63-62 victory over Mason City.

Marshalltown Community College girls basketball squad defeated Simpson College junior varsity 73-55 as Katie Kitzman paced the Tigers with 20 points and Javiera Novion followed with 15, both draining three-3-pointers and Lacee Bates added 14 points.

Shay Hager was the first to complete her studies at EXCEL Alternate High School and received her MHS diploma.

The MHS girls slipped past LDF 65-64 giving the Warhawks their third 1-point loss as Anne McFadden led all scorers with 36 points.

Area students taking top honors at the Iowa Valley Spelling Bee were: Angela Wrage, of Gladbrook-Reinbeck Middle School, first; Tyler Ingham, Gladbrook-Reinbeck Middle School, second; Nick Merulla, West Marshall, third; and Brandon McWilliams, Green Mountain-Garwin, fourth.

The MHS matmen defeated West Des Moines Valley High School 38-18 as Damon Harry, Brad Rebik, Danny Lovell, Zach Ray and B.J. Woosley all pinned their opponents.

The MHS sophomores were victorious over East Waterloo 70-55 with Dan Clayton scoring 21 points, Joe Miller, 18, and Scott Hughes, 16, to lead the scoring.

Miller Middle School students Lucia Gutierrez and Brittany Arment tried their hands on a Lennox Manual task training tool and some assembly line equipment at Lennox as the eighth graders got a tour of the facility.

Jessie Bowman, daughter of Jim and Patty Bowman, was installed as president of the Junior Miss Club and the 7th grade Y-Teens for the 1992-93 school year.

The women’s gymnastics at MHS defeated Newton 127.40-109.95 as MHS took first and second places in: floor exercise and tumbling, Denise Leavy, first, and Cindy Whitehill, second; and Christi Ruff won the vault with Jaci Farrell, second.

Dakota Wesleyan University senior men’s basketball player Brock Seim, of Le Grand, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII second team. Seim sports a 3.63 grade point average as a math major and a business minor and he averages 23 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

The Bobcat boys edged Valley 71-69 in the championship game of the McDonald’s-Urbandale tournament as Mike Burggraaf hit 23 points and Ben Buchanan added 20 points and nine rebounds.

Miller Junior High students: Roger Rainsbarger, Christy Bennett, Sean Flater, Kevin Rhodes, Terri Breed, Martha Lake, Nancy Peterson, Dave Bradbury, Londa Gealow and Lynn Petrie earned the right to represent Miller in the Marshalltown Spelling Contest.

Girl Scout Cadette Troop 969 represented by Kelly Carmer, Breanna Dannen and Shellie Robinson visited the Iowa Veterans Home and rubber stamped Valentine’s Day cards then distributed them to the residents.

The visiting Bobcat junior varsity took a 54-51 victory over the Ames Little Cyclones as Clint Mattingly topped the MH scorers with 14 points and seven rebounds and Charlie Mason finished with 13 points.
