Grundy Center boys basketball downed Garwin 73-62 to win its third straight district championship and a trip to sub-state as Rick Venenga led the Spartans with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

Jillissa Molnari, a senior at MHS, placed second in the Voice of Democracy contest at the Third District level after winning the Marshalltown VFW Post #839 and it Auxiliary contest.

Green Mountain-Garwin students Amanda Erickson, Matt McGinty, Joe Glocki, Ryan Van Haaften, Joanna Bobince and Daniel Montgomery practiced for opening night in the GMG musical “Bye Bye Birdie.”

Julie Eichorn placed the highest among MHS debaters in the All-Iowa finals of the Iowa High School Forensic League when she placed third in the state in the prose and poetry interpretation category.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck forward Tyson Dirks was named the North Iowa Cedar League West Division’s Outstanding Player as voted by the league’s coaches and Dirks and sophomore Brett Bengen were named to the first team All NICL West after leading the rebels to a 12-0 perfect season. Also taking first team honors were Walker Seim and Trent Mullikin, both of East Marshall.

Kristen Cocking participated in the Iowa Federation of Music Clubs Festival in Waterloo and received the Golden Cup for her performance.

In rehearsal for the B.R. Miller Junior High Symphonic and Concert bands were: Michelle Hamilton, baritone horn, soloist, and Todd Metge and Geno Pearson who performed a trumpet duet.

Grand View College senior basketball player Marcus Thie, of Marshalltown, was named to the Midwest Classic All-Conference honorable mention team for averaging 9.9 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Grundy Center Spartans defeated St. Ansgar 50-37 in Class 1A substate action to earn their trip to state as Rob Baker led the offense with 15 points.

Dan Linke was named to the first team Big 8 Basketball All Conference team and Perry Meyer and Jeff Isgrig secured second team honors.

Fourth grade student from Marshalltown Area Catholic School, Molly Freese, won first place, fourth grade, in the VFW Elementary Essay contest, first place at the district level and came in second for fourth grade in the state contest.

Jennifer Johnson, of Gilman, was awarded a $4,000 Presidential Scholarship from Dana College in Blair, Neb., to be split $1,000 per year over the four years.

Patrick Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson, was initiated into membership in Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society at Drake University.

The winner in the 6th Annual Photo Contest sponsored by the Marshall County Conservation Board for the youth division was Johanna Stephens, of State Center, for her image of a sunset and clouds.

No. 1 Colo-NESCO girls made it look easy in the 93-64 win over Sigourney in the first round of the 1992 Girls State Tournament as Missy Miller hit for 38 points, Kris Wildeboer for 28 and Liz Anderson scored 14 points to lead the Royals offensively.

Two former area girls basketball players freshman forward Sharon Esbeck, of Marshalltown, and Joni Stubbs, freshman guard of Green Mountain, made the trip to the National Junior College Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., with their Ellsworth Community College women’s basketball team.

The Marshalltown eighth grade Apgar 7up volleyball team of: Taylor Simbides, Kylee Button, Autumn Fontanini, Tanae Spencer, Katelynn Sjoblom, Jaymee Dalbec and Brittany Ambler won its fourth tournament during the winter season.

Area cagers named to the Boys All-HOIC: Jamie Zeller, of West Marshall, and Travis Meiman, of Colo-NESCO, were named to the first team and Brady Vaudt, of West Marshall, made the second team.
