PTA contest winners in the State PTA Reflections Program were: Crystal Garrett for her music composition and playing the piano and Skip Boston for his photo of Mormon Ridge Cabin.

Connie Greiner was awarded a $400 Veisha Leadership Scholarship at the annual Veisha celebration at Iowa State University and planned to attend ISU in the fall.

Bright ideas netted two fourth grade students awards in invention as Jacob Ramsey-Smith, Rogers Elementary, had an award winning “Sled Saver” and Ellyn Boland, Fisher Elementary, invented the “Stroller Handle Extender” for the taller person. Both won “Most Meritorious” awards and moved to the state competition.

The MHS ninth and 10th grade girls track racked up 139 points to run away with its own invitational as records fell in the 4×800 relay with team: Shelly Brueggeman, Karen Bomar, Courtney Fulton and Michelle Peter; the 4×100 relay team of: DaJean Spencer, Nicole Paxson, Jill Anderson and Trisha Luthro; and the 4×400 relay of: Olivia Baughman, Andrea Etter, Janna Murray and Shanna Steward.

MHS long jumper Derek Williams jumped 21 feet and 10.5 inches at the Iowa Track & Field Co-Ed State Championships and netted the school’s first long jump title in 91 years.

Laura Sholes was awarded a $600 AIB Alumni & Friends Scholarship from American Institute of Business.

Tracy Haley, 18, of State Center, achieved a rarity for a pilot of his age as he received his commercial pilot’s license and instrument rating and is qualified in all to fly in all types of weather.

Brian Wauters displayed his specially equipped bike he received in time for his eighth birthday. Wauters, born with spina bifida, a condition that permanently his strength and lower leg motor development, was assisted in getting this $1,200 bike through a generous donation of $750 from the Marshalltown Jaycees.

Lori Thompson and John Keyser were presented with the Nick Norris Career Journalism Award given out once every four years to the student/students to further their journalism education.

MHS student Summer Downs received a second place award of $350 in the statewide patriotic art contest sponsored by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for her drawing of an American eagle with the face of Scott Nisely on its chest.

The MHS boys’ golf squad shot a 300 to edge out Newton for the Central Iowa Metro League National Conference title as John Briggs earned medalist honors with a score of 72.
