Mount Vernon

• Mount Vernon may soon allow private wells to be constructed or drilled within the city limits if they first receive a waiver approved by the city council. The current city ordinance does not allow any new private wells. It requires all residences and businesses within city limits to be connected to the public water system if a water main is within 100 feet of the property line. The city council at the Jan. 15 meeting unanimously passed the first reading of a proposed ordinance to allow the city council to consider a waiver to construct private wells in subdivisions of four lots or fewer, or on individual lots where a property line is more than 100 feet from a city water main. — Sun, Mount Vernon-Lisbon

Hubbard-Radcliffe

• About this time in 1993, a group of Hubbard-Radcliffe girls were about to launch a post-season basketball campaign they hoped would take them all the way to a state championship. After 39 years of coaching, Les Hueser had won just bout everything – except a 6-on-6 state championship and this was the last year to accomplish that. The Iowa Girls Athletic Union had already announced that the girls would go to the traditional five-player game the following year. The Hubbard-Radcliffe Lady Rebels defeated Altantic 85-66. Tonight at the half time of the South Hamilton-South Hardin girls basketball game in Eldora the 1993 Lady Rebels will be honored. — South Hardin Signal-Review
