Local man charged with felony
A Marshalltown man was arrested earlier this week by the Marshalltown Police Department after he assaulted another male. Lance M. Schaum, 26, allegedly struck another man in the face hard enough to make him fall to the ground, striking his head on the cement and causing serious head trauma, according to Marshall County District Court records. Schaum was charged with willful injury-causing bodily injury, a Class C felony, and taken to Marshall County Jail. A preliminary hearing on the charge has been set for 1 p.m., March 6, in Marshall County District Court. Bond was set at $10,000 cash. Schaum is also being held on a separate warrant with no bond.

The probation revocation hearing will be scheduled by the District Court. Schaum is being held without bond. The preliminary hearing on the willful injury charge is 1 p.m. on March 6. Bond is $10,000 cash only. A photograph and fingerprint order was issued. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.
• Matthew Christopher Vajgrt made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated-third offense charge, a driving under suspension charge, a no valid driver’s license charge, a failure to maintain control charge and a no insurance charge. The public defender’s office was appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 15. Vajgrt was released with supervision through the Department of Correctional Services and is to report no later than 4 p.m. on Friday to the adult probation office to sign a pre-trial release agreement.
• Zachariah Lee Zimmerman made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge. He pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75 plus restitution if applicable, due within 30 days.
• Triston Scarborough made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. He pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days.
• Kelly Poage made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. She pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days.

• On Wednesday, a vehicle driven by Douglas Michael Lass, of Rhodes, was southbound on Cooper Avenue when it struck a deer that exited the west ditch. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Lass vehicle was estimated at $1,500.

• On Thursday, a car owned by Cale Matthew Friest, of Marshalltown, was parked at Marshalltown Community College continuing education building when it sustained hit and run damage to the front driver’s side bumper, mirror and door. Damage to the Friest car was estimated at $2,500.
• On Wednesday, Feb. 22, a car driven by Martha Ann Eggers, of Marshalltown, was exiting a private driveway onto North 14th Avenue when it struck the driver’s side back quarter panel on a city truck operated by Richard Matthew Weitzell, of Le Grand, that was parked while working on the street. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Weitzell truck was estimated at $500.
