Marshalltown man tased, arrested in western Iowa

LAKE VIEW — A Sac County sheriff’s deputy was forced to use his Taser to take a Marshalltown man into custody over the weekend.

According to KCIM Radio, Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure reported the arrest occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Lake View. The deputy had stopped at the Sparky’s convenience story in Lake View and was informed that a suspicious male had come into the business two times, wanting to use the phone.

The man, 23-year-old Korey Austin Martz of Marshalltown, fit the description of a man who had fled on foot after a traffic stop was performed by Lake View Police. The deputy located Martz walking behind TCT Trucking in Lake View, and when he initiated contact, Martz fled again. A foot chase ensued, with the deputy issuing several warnings for the suspect to stop. When Martz did not comply, the deputy deployed his Taser. Martz was taken into custody without further incident.

Martz has two warrants for his arrest out of Marshall County — one for violation of parole and the other for voluntary absence from custody.

On May 16, Martz signed out of a Marshalltown residential facility to go to work in Conrad. According to court documents, at 3:33 p.m. that afternoon, a strap tamper was received on the GPS monitoring device worn by Martz. A probation officer contacted Martz’ employer who had noted that Martz had been fired from job.

Martz now also faces an additional charge of interference with official acts.

He currently remains in custody with the Sac County Sheriff’s Office.

Man back in custody

A Marshalltown man wanted a number of charges, including multiple theft and forgery charges has been apprehended.

Marshalltown Police Capt. Mike Hanken said that Alfredo Ramiro Rico, 21, was picked up by authorities in Ottumwa earlier this week after he failed to appear in court on a theft charge.

Hanken said Rico was one of several suspects connected to the theft and forgery of checks reported stolen from woman’s purse from earlier this year.

“He was the last of the bunch,” the captain said.

Rico’s next court appearance is an arraignment set for 1 p.m. June 1, followed by a preliminary hearing on three forgery charges and two fifth-degree theft charges at 1 p.m. June 2.

A pretrial hearing for Rico on a third-degree theft charged is slated for 1:30 p.m. June 23 and a jury trial set for 9 a.m. June 29, all in Marshall County District Court.

He is currently being held in the Marshall County Jail on a $14,000 cash or surety bond.
