• Alfredo Ramiro Rico made an initial appearance on a warrant charging him with two counts of forgery, on a warrant charging him with two counts of theft-fifth degree, on a failure to appear for an arraignment hearing charge, a failure to appear for a pre-trial conference charge involving a theft-third degree case and on a forgery charge. Jeff Hazen has been appointed as counsel for all the forgery, the two theft-fifth degree charges and the theft-third degree case. The public defender’s office will continue as counsel on the arraignment hearing. The preliminary hearing for the forgery and theft-fifth charges is set at 1 p.m. on June 2. The arraignment hearing is rescheduled at 1 p.m. on June 1. The jury trial for the theft-third degree charge is rescheduled for 9 a.m. on June 29 with the pre-trial conference rescheduled at 1:30 p.m. on June 23. Bond for all charges combined equals $14,000 cash or surety.
• Jose De Jesus Chavarria Garcia made an initial appearance through a Spanish interpreter on a theft-second degree charge. Darrell Meyer is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on June 2. Bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety. Chavarria Garcia has an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold on him.
• Aung Lwin Win made an initial appearance through a Burmese interpreter on a domestic abuse assault-causing bodily injury charge. Aaron Vaughn has been appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on June 2. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety. If he owns or possesses any firearms or ammunition, Win is to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours to make arrangements to surrender them. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.
• Kelly Paris Bryant made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge. She pleaded not guilty and the court appointed Christian Stickrod as counsel. A pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9 a.m. on June 28 in Magistrate Court. Bryant is released on her promise to appear.

Accidents
• On Sunday, a car driven by Hunter Christian Ralston, of Marshalltown, was westbound in the 300 block of Meadow Lane when it struck a legally parked Pontiac and shoved it into a legally parked Honda. No injuries were reported. Ralston was cited for no insurance-accident, striking unattended vehicles and possession of alcohol under the legal age limit. Damage to the Ralston and the Pontiac cars was estimated at $5,000 each while the Honda received an estimated $500 in damage.
• On Saturday, a car driven by Bradley Paul Collins, of Marshalltown, hit a fence on Westwood Drive then drove to Sixth Street and turned northbound. The Collins car had a flat tire at that time in the 900 block of South Sixth Street and swerved into the turning lane meant for southbound traffic at the same moment a pickup driven by a 16-year-old female traveling south moved into the turn lane resulting in a head-on collision. Collins was transported to UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown. Collins as cited for failure to maintain control, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, improper use of lanes and striking fixtures upon a highway. Damage to the Collins car was estimated at $7,000 while the juvenile’s pickup received an estimated $5,000 in damage and a fence belonging to Elmwood Country Club an estimated $500 in damage.
• On Friday, a pickup driven by James Allen Ward, of Gilman, was northbound in the 10 block of South Eighth Avenue when it missed the turn, partially pulled into a parking lot and then proceeded to back up striking pedestrian Heather Ann Simpson, of Albion, as she was walking across the street. Simpson was transported to UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown for evaluation.
• On May 18, a vehicle driven by Kibrom Kahsay Yohanes, of Guymon, Okla., was southbound on South Center Street when it attempted to go around a Jeep driven by Dallas Lane Sorlaesith, of Marshalltown, which was waiting to turn left onto Ferner Street, and collided with the passenger side bumper. No injuries were reported. Yohanes was cited for unsafe start of a stopped vehicle. Damage to the Yohanes vehicle was estimated at $750 while the Sorlaesith Jeep received an estimated $300 in damage.
• On May 16, a car driven by Marcus James Schmidt, of Marshalltown, was eastbound on East Grant Street when the driver discovered a bee in the car and panicked running a stop sign and collided broadside with a car driven by Janette Rae Tool, of Marshalltown, which was northbound on North First Avenue. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Schmidt car was estimated at $3,000 while the Tool car received an estimated $2,000 in damage.
