• Daniel Dion Scates made an initial appearance on a ongoing criminal conduct charge, a forgery charge, a providing false identification information charge and a theft-third degree charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 2. Bond is set at $25,000 cash or surety. The court ordered that Scates by photographed and fingerprinted in connection with this case.

• Shania Rose Kapayou made an initial appearance on a ongoing criminal conduct charge, a forgery charge and a theft-third degree charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 2. Bond is set at $25,000 cash or surety.

• Joseph Daniel Martinez made an initial appearance on a domestic abuse assault-impeding the flow of blood or air charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 12. Martinez is released under supervision of the Department of Correctional Services and is to report to the adult probation office by 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 to sign a pre-trial release agreement. If he owns any firearms, Martinez is to surrender them to the Marshalltown Police Department within 24 hours. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Thomas Raymond Davis made an initial appearance on a operating while intoxicated-first offense charge. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 12. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Erick Alejandro Laguna Tafolla made an initial appearance on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. Laguna Tafolla pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge, a $10 DARE surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $282.75, due within 30 days.

• Carlos Jaliel Davila Romero made an initial appearance on a violation of a no-contact order/contempt of court charge. The contempt hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 2. Davila Romero was released on his promise to appear. A new no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Richard Louis Sweet made an initial appearance on a three counts of a pre-trial release violation charge. All three pre-trial releases have been revoked. Bond is set at $15,000 cash or surety.

• Lonnie A. Larson made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. Jeff Hazen is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing will be scheduled by the District Associate Court. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case.

• Courtney Dorothy Louise Powers made an initial appearance on a domestic abuse assault-impeding the flow of blood or air charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 12. Powers is released on her promise to appear. If he owns any firearms, Powers is to surrender them to the Marshalltown Police Department within 24 hours. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Jennifer Perez made an initial appearance on a no valid driver’s license charge. Perez produced a license and the county attorney amended the charge to an expired license charge. Perez pleaded guilty to the expired license and the fine is $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50, due within 30 days.

• Tammy Short made an initial appearance through counsel, Jeff Hazen, on a pre-trial release violation charge. Per recommendation of the county attorney’s office, the Magistrate lifted the warrant and instructed Short to go immediately to the adult probation office and sign the pre-trial release agreement.

• On Monday, Kristie Sue Steelsmith, 47, was arrested for failure to maintain control, interference with official acts and operating while intoxicated-first offense.
