• Alex Tejeda made an initial appearance on two counts of a possession of a controlled substance-third or subsequent offense charge, a possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance-first offense charge and a interference with official acts charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 7. Bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days of release.

• David Randall Riedle made an initial appearance on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and a warrant charging him with failure to appear for a sentencing hearing. On the drug paraphernalia charge Riedle pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $272.75, due within 30 days. The sentencing hearing will be rescheduled by the District Associate Court. Bond is set at $5,000 cash or surety.

• Mark Christopher Judge made an initial appearance on a criminal mischief-third degree charge, a criminal mischief-fifth degree charge and a simple assault charge. Jeff Hazen is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 14. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Jessica Rae Smith made an initial appearance on a driving while barred-habitual offender charge. Breanna Nelson is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 15. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case.

• Dayana Mons Chavarria Guevara made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge. Christian Stickrod is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 14. Chavarria Guevara is released on her promise to appear. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Paulino Verdinez Jr. made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. Verdinez will represent himself before the court. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 15. Verdinez is released on his promise to appear. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Timothy Stephen Jones made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge. Jones pleaded not guilty. The pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on March 21 in Magistrate Court. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case.

Accidents

• On Friday, a car driven by William Artemio Yanez Najarro, 24, of Marshalltown, was adjusting his rear view mirror when he collided with the rear of a car driven by Ila Colleen Goodman, 81, of Marshalltown, which was stopped awaiting to make a left turn. No injuries were reported. Yanez Najarro was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the Yanez Najarro car was estimated at $4,000 while the Goodman car received an estimated $2,500 in damage.

• On Friday, a pickup driven by Cesar Enrique Diaz Lara, 37, of Marshalltown, was westbound in the 1200 block of West Lincoln Way when, due to the icy conditions, Diaz Lara lost control of his pickup, crossed the center line and collided with a minivan driven by Nicholas E. Heath, 35, of Marshalltown, which was traveling east. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Heath minivan was estimated at $8,000 while the Diaz Lara pickup received an estimated $3,000 in damage.
