The Students of Urban Leadership presents: Photographs by Jami Milne at the Iowa State Memorial Union

AMES — A new art exhibit is on display at The Iowa State Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way in Ames. The Multicultural Center is on the second floor and is open for viewing between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., call 515-296-6848. Urban Leadership is committed to empowering students on their journey to becoming community-based activists. Milne has been involved with the program since 2014, and the photos include in this exhibit are a sample of the more than 80 students photographed in 2016. The students were asked to write an accompanying statement ensuring the viewers understood they had a greater story to tell.

Urban Leadership is open to all high school students (grades 10-12) in Des Moines Public Schools. Based in the principles of hip-hop culture, students engage in an in-depth study of social movements shaping U.S. history and urban settings across the United States. Through the use of various mediums such as the written and spoken word, urban arts, youth + community summits and internships in both elementary schools and non-profit organizations, youth engage in leadership opportunities and learn to use their powerful voices to become the leaders of their generation.

In her artist’s statement Milne said she “shoots to make real life coveted. Her subjects vary, but core to each piece is the ability to connect with the soul on the other side of the lens, bringing out the beautiful truth in every photograph.”

Milne was recently chosen as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence for Ballet Des Moines, spending six-months in the studio capturing a body of work surrounding the nine dancers in the professional company. Two of her large-scale photographic murals were commissioned for exterior buildings in Des Moines: Just Press Pause and The Distance Formula.

In addition to several exhibits in her hometown of Des Moines, her work has been selected for juried exhibits in several galleries throughout the country, including Middlebury, Vt., Santa Barbara, Calif., and New York City.

Milne is a graduate of Iowa State University and currently lives in Des Moines.
