Half million dollar locker room project approved
The Marshalltown School Board approved construction bids of $558,200 to remodel two floors of the boys locker rooms at Miller Middle School.
The bid from Garling Construction of Belle Plaine was approved during a meeting Monday.
Remodeling work will update the locker rooms, which haven’t had “any productive construction” since being built in 1927, said Marshalltown Schools Superintendent Marvin Wade.
There was concern from the board that bids came in well over the original estimate. Board member John Johnson said projects coming in over budget has been a trend lately.
“That’s just a concern as we go on with other projects,” Johnson said.
Another project that was in line for approval at this meeting was halted for this summer. The entrance security upgrade project for Hoglan, Franklin and Woodbury elementary schools and the Marshalltown Learning Academy received only one bid, which was withdrawn.
“Right now, we do not have any bids for that project,” said District Architect Dave Schulze.
Schulze recommended this work be bid in the context of a bigger job in the future to attract more bidders. Board member Kay Beach called the lack of bids for this security update “unfortunate.”
In another bid approval, the board gave its blessing for the district to purchase 1,300 Acer Chromebook computers for a total of $357,708 from Zones of Auburn, Wash. These small laptop computers will be used by students at Lenihan Intermediate School and Miller Middle School as part of the increased effort to implement technology in Marshalltown. These computers will stay in the buildings and students will not be allowed to take them home.
The board also approved the purchase of 58 carts where these computers will be stored for $82,302 from CDW Government of Vernon Hills, Ill.
The next regular meeting of the board will be at the new district offices on the site of the former Anson Middle School at 5 p.m. July 7. The board also has planned a brief meeting to discuss bids for the Anson Elementary School parking lot work at 10:30 a.m. June 25 at the new board room site.
