Shooting victim identified

LAUREL – Officials have released the name of the man critically injured in a shooting incident last week.

Late Sunday night, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office told the Times-Republican that Gerardo Cervantes, 25, of Marshalltown was the man who suffered a gunshot wound to the head at a friend’s residence at 203 Market St., in Laurel in the early morning hours on Nov. 25.

As of Sunday night, the sheriff’s office noted that Cervantes remains in critical condition at a Des Moines hospital.

At about 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 25, law enforcement responded to a report that a man was suffering from a gunshot wound at 203 Market St., in Laurel.

The man – Cervantes – was transported by ambulance to Central Iowa Healthcare in Marshalltown and subsequently air lifted to a trauma center in Des Moines.

The incident was reported as an accidental injury, said Marshall County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Hoffman, adding that three other people were with Cervantes at the time of the shooting. All three, Hoffman said, were cooperating with law enforcement.

“There is no reason for the public to feel at risk,” he emphasized at the time.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to evaluate the evidence in this case.
