Y to host 2016 RAGBRAI route party

Riding stationary bicycles and taking directions from instructors, riders of all ages and skill levels “rode” the 2015 RAGBRAI route of Sioux City, Storm Lake, Fort Dodge, Eldora, Cedar Falls, Hiawatha, Coralville and Davenport nearly one year ago in studio 1 at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA’s Horne-Henry Center.

The inaugural event was a huge success, and the Y, in tandem with its cycling instructors, area bicycling enthusiasts and sponsors, will be repeating it again in studio 1 from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 24.

The event will celebrate the 2016 RAGBRAI route, which will be announced by the Des Moines Register Jan. 23.

Last year’s “ride” had plenty of up-tempo music, dancing, trivia questions, light refreshments, and more.

Instructors and volunteers made sure everyone had fun, while getting in a good workout too.

“There is no sign up, but a 30-minute maximum ride will be enforced if there are people waiting to ride,” said Keisha Lockhart, Y Health and Wellness Coordinator. “Enjoy light refreshments and begin one’s 2016 RAGBRAI cycling adventure. Bring your favorite RAGBRAI goodie to share if you wish.”

RAGBRAI was created by Des Moines Register columnists John Karras and Donald Kaul. The first RAGBRAI was held Aug. 26-31, 1973. Marshalltown has served as overnight host four times in the event’s 41-year history.
