Victim identified in weekend death investigation

Authorities have identified the man who died early Saturday morning following an assault in the alleyway next to the downtown bar.

The Marshalltown Police Department on Monday morning identified the victim as James John Anderson, 48, of Marshalltown.

An autopsy was conducted on Sunday and results are pending. No other information has been released.

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, officers were called to the alley south of the Center Street Station bar, 19 N. Center St., for a male subject on the ground and bleeding.

When officers and medical personnel arrived they found an unresponsive Anderson bleeding from his head. Anderson was transported to Central Iowa Healthcare’s Emergency Room where he died as a result of his injuries.

The suspect, Brandon Paul Skidmore, 31, of Marshalltown, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Marshall County Jail. He was charged with murder in the second degree, a Class B felony.

The investigation remains ongoing.
