Pictured is 519 N. Center St. which was heavily damaged in an early Sunday morning fire. The Marshalltown Fire Department extinguished the blaze. Marshalltown Police Department reported to arriving crews the property had been vacant for “a couple of years.”
No injuries were reported, and authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
However, six fires in vacant structures earlier this year were the work of an arsonist, said Marshalltown Fire Chief David Rierson.
“After our investigation it has been determined the fires were intentionally set,” said Rierson in an April press release. “All properties involved were abandoned or unoccupied.”
Rierson said the only common denominator is the properties were abandoned or unoccupied.
“For example, the fires happened at different times of the day and night,” he said. Residents who notice suspicious activity in or around vacant properties are urged to contact the MPD at 641-754-5725.
