Local compost facility to close Dec. 10
Marshalltown residents who have been procrastinating taking leaves and yard debris to the compost facility, 900 Woodland Drive, should do so as soon as possible.
That is because it will close for the season at the end of business Dec. 10.
Justin Nickel, public works director, made the announcement via press release.
Consequently, procrastinators have but seven days to finish up yard work.
The facility opened March 22, one of the earliest on record, while the Dec. 10 closing exceeds last year’s closing by four days.
Until recently, a warm fall and no ice or snow meant the facility was taking in thousands of leaves, among other items, daily.
Favorable weather motivated Marshalltonians to rake leaves and trim bushes and trees. Many customers were bringing in city of Marshalltown approved compost bags full of leaves and yard waste.
The bags are sold at a number of local retailers and the compost center.
There is no charge to dump those. A fee is charged for other bags.
All non-approved bags and other containers must be removed.
Tree debris and yard waste are the only items accepted at the compost center.
Area garbage collectors will not pick up trees, branches, leaves, brush, or yard and garden waste for disposal at the landfill.
The street division processes the materials into wood chip mulch and compost, which is sold to residents.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 12-4 p.m. Sunday.
