Orphan Grain Train ships items to those in need

The Orphan Grain Train (OGT) Branch 23 in Clemons has been busy shipping supplies to those in need around the world. Earlier this week, a 53-foot semi left for 12 churches on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. The OGT, headquartered in Norfolk, Neb., sent 7,200 meals to be included in the shipment. Some 1,600 quilts, 800 boxes of clothing, school kits, layette kits, health kits and various medical supplies will be aiding those in need on the Navajo reservation. In October, the OGT shipped 2,500 quilts, and 1,400 boxes of winter clothing, crutches, canes and walkers to Moldova, situated on the Black Sea by Ukraine. It was shipped in a palletainer by cargo ship and was scheduled to complete its journey this week. Donations of clothing, quilts and monetary contributions for shipping costs are accepted every Tuesday (excluding Dec. 27) from 8-11 a.m. at the Clemons Branch, 302 Bevin St. Monetary donations can also be mailed to P.O. Box 120, Clemons, Iowa 50051. Meanwhile, a soup luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11 at the Clemons Branch. Free will donations for the meal will go toward a $5,000 matching funds opportunity. Other donations also will be accepted.
