Fire damages house

A weekend house fire has damaged a Marshalltown residence.

At 1:27 p.m. Saturday, the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to 719 N. 4th Ave. on a reported basement fire. On arrival fire crews observed smoke and fire coming from the front door and eaves of the building. The owner of the home stated no one was inside and he had observed the fire in the basement and called 9-1-1.

Fire crews made entry into the basement and extinguished the majority of the fire. Crews found the fire had traveled to the first floor and was contained inside the wall. Portions of the wall and ceiling were removed to extinguish the remaining fire. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $6,000.

An investigation determined that embers from a wood burning stove in the basement ignited combustible items that were in close proximity to the stove.
