First grader enjoys games

Is known for his kindness

T-R PHOTO BY SARA JORDAN-HEINTZ Gavin Rodregez, 7, is a studious first grader at Marshalltown Christian School. He likes to sing, read, bowl and play soccer. He would like to be a firefighter when he grows up.

Gavin Rodregez, 7, has the exuberance one expects to find in a first grader.

“I like to play hide and seek and tag at recess. I like books where we find stuff, like a scavenger hunt,” he said. “I play soccer and I like to sing.”

Gavin attends Marshalltown Christian School where he is known for his friendly manner.

“He is just a really nice boy. Everybody likes him, and he’s everybody’s friend,” said teacher Joyce Dielschneider.

Gavin’s favorite subject matter in school is reading, but he most looks forward to recess. The oldest of three children, he has a baby brother and a two-year-old sister. The family has two dogs.

“I like to play with my sister and look at my baby brother when he’s awake. He’s really cute,” the child said.

Family fun night is spent playing Kerplunk. The object of the game is to remove sticks from a tube while dropping the least amount of marbles.

Despite being only seven years old, Gavin has built a reputation as a formidable opponent when it comes to bowling.

“At our school Christmas party he was in the lead bowling, even over the teachers,” said Principal Dr. Joan Gerbo.

Gavin enjoys singing. He said his favorite song is called “I Will Go Where You Will Go.” He also plays soccer.

When he grows up, the first grader would like to become a firefighter.

“Because I could help people,” he said.

“He’s a really good friend to students. He’s just a genuine, sincere young man, who has a big heart,” Dr. Gerbo said.
