HaverChill fishing tournament set for Saturday

HAVERHILL — As a way of raising funds for the community’s yearly Haverhill Days celebration, a group of dedicated citizens have been hosting periodic fundraisers to help meet their financial goals and celebrate the fun Haverhill has to offer. Their first HaverChill Day was held in January, but because of muddy conditions, the fishing tournament had to be postponed.

“We’re holding our second HaverChill Day this Saturday, hosting a fishing tournament at Illum’s Pond (located at 2208 255th Street in Marshalltown), from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by an all-you-can-eat turkey and beef fry and crawfish boil at 2 p.m. at the Haverhill Social Club,” said coordinator Emily Ewoldt.

A $40 entry fee per two-person team is required for the fishing tournament. Pre-registration is available at Floors & More, or the morning of the event at the pond. For more information, call 641-751-0352.

Cash prizes will be awarded for: total weight in bluegills, biggest crappie, biggest perch, biggest walleye and biggest bass. The cost of the meal is $20, and is open to the public.

The next event the Haverhill Days committee has planned is an Easter egg hunt for adults, set for Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. The cost to participate is $60 per team (six people maximum per team). Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Haverhill Social Club with the hunt set up around town. Participants are encouraged to dress in costumes. The Easter Bunny will be on hand for photos too. Afterwards at the Haverhill Social Club there will be a “Carrot Cook Off” where participants can bring in their best carrot-based recipe (sweet or savory) to compete for prizes. Cost is $5 to enter.

Funds raised from these events will benefit this year’s Haverhill Days, set for July 29-30.
