Flying the flags again
Fundraising effort under way for Conrad Cemetery flagpole replacement
CONRAD — The Avenue of Flags Committee of the Conrad American Legion Auxiliary have begun several fundraising efforts in order to replace nearly 200 flagpoles for the Conrad Cemetery.
The original 150 flagpoles were purchased in the late 1960s or early 1970s, and have been erected by Legion members each Memorial Day to honor the veterans who have sacrificed themselves to maintain our great nation and our country’s freedom.
Cost to purchase the new 200 flagpoles are figured at $50 each for the pole, including the caps and hardware.
According to committee chairpersons Bob and Veronica Daniel and Leonard and Janice Tranbarger, donations of any size are currently being accepted through a letter campaign. Tax deductible donations can be made payable to the Avenue of Flags and sent to Janice Tranbarger at 32730 G Ave., Conrad, Iowa, 50621. All names of donors or donating organizations will be recognized on a memorial poster board that will be displayed during functions at the Legion Hall; at the Veteran’s Day program at the high school and at the Memorial Day service at the Conrad Cemetery.
In addition, the Conrad auxiliary members have a community ice cream social planned to help raise funds for the poles. That event will be held on June 17 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the legion hall. The menu includes beef burgers, salads, ice cream, pie, cookies and drinks.
The auxiliary unit will also serve lunch on June 10 after the Black Dirt Days parade until 1:30 p.m. This menu includes beef burgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, chips, pie, milk, lemonade and coffee.
