New poetry group organizes
First meet-up session slated for May 25
Where can people go to read and listen to poetry, surrounded by fellow poetry enthusiasts?
The Orpheum Theater will play host to the new “Oral Poetry Edition Night” (OPEN) events, with the first meet-up being held Thursday, May 25, starting at 6:30 p.m., inside the Orpheum’s gallery, and held there the last Thursday of the month thereafter (except in December).
“I love to listen to poetry and read it, and wished there was someplace in Marshalltown to do that,” said Jeannine Loros, who is coordinating these events along with Linda Moore.
The coordinators hope to draw folks who are interested in sharing their own poetry, reading works by established poets and/or just sitting back and listening.
“We got inspired by ‘The United State of Poetry’ event held at the Orpheum in April. We want to bring together other poetry lovers, whether they enjoy reading or writing or listening to poetry,” Moore said.
At the first session, the goal is to figure out what poetry-related literature people are interested in sharing and learning more about.
“We hope to bring in guest poets and have people share their own poetry; I love when people write their souls,” Loros said. “Maybe we’ll learn about poets [for one session], then the next one spend time writing.”
These poetry sessions are free and open to the public. Loros and Moore are interested in securing sponsorship in order to expand what the group can offer.
