Names in the hat
School board filing period begins Monday
With four seats up in the 2017 Marshalltown School Board election set for Sept. 12, those interested in running must follow a few steps to file as a candidate, and they can do so beginning Monday.
First, according to board secretary Brian Bartz, an aspiring candidate must collect 50 signatures from eligible voters within the Marshalltown Community School District. Once the signatures are filled out on a petition, the filer must fill out an affidavit.
The affidavit can be picked up at the district’s Central Administration Office, 1002 S. 3rd Ave. or at the Marshall County Auditor’s office at 1 E. Main St. The affidavit can also be found on the Iowa Secretary of State website.
Once filled-out, the affidavit can be turned in to Bartz at the Central Administration Office starting July 10. The deadline to turn in the document to Bartz is 5 p.m. Aug. 3.
The four Marshalltown seats up in 2017 are currently held by Board President Bea Niblock, Mike Miller, Ben Fletcher and Kendall Derby. The seats held by Niblock, Miller and Derby are for four-year terms.
Fletcher’s seat will see a two-year term, as he was selected by the board to fill a vacancy in October of 2016, and the seat must therefore be up in the next available election, as well as the election in the seat’s normal term cycle. The seat will be up for election again in 2019, as a result.
