Speed enforcement this weekend

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and Marshalltown Police Department will be joining law enforcement agencies across the Midwest in a special speed enforcement project this weekend.

Law enforcement across the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Region 7 will be working to enforce speed limits this Friday through Sunday. Region 7 includes Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. According to state and national crash statistics, excessive speed is one of the leading contributing factors in crashes resulting in injury or death.

Motorists can expect to see extra officers patrolling our roadways during this time. Officers will be utilizing many different methods of checking vehicle speeds including patrol vehicle radar, hand-held laser, and State Patrol aircraft.

While the focus of the project is speed violations, officers will also be looking for other violations that lead to crashes, such as impaired driving and distracted driving. Those officers will also be looking for seat belt and child restraint use.

As of July 18, 158 people have died in crashes on Iowa roadways.
