Woman accused of embezzlement

A Marshalltown woman is accused of stealing roughly $20,000 from a local church where she was employed.

The Marshalltown Police Department arrested and charged Dawn Cagwin Muller, 63, with first-degree theft and ongoing criminal conduct late last week after a nearly two-month investigation.

MPD Capt. Brian Batterson said from February of 2016 through May of 2017, Muller allegedly stole “in excess of or nearly” $20,000 from the First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. During this time frame, Muller worked as the church’s financial secretary.

Batterson said church officials were concerned about financial impropriety and had an outside audit conducted. The results of that audit was then turned over to the MPD this past June, thus beginning the nearly two-month investigation by local authorities.

After her arrest, Muller was released on her own recognizance. She then waived her right to a preliminary hearing on Monday in Marshall County District. Her next court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
