Since 2011, Calvin Rockett Sports Bar & Grill has been owned and operated by the father/daughter team of Tim and Alli Shore. Tim also ran the eatery when it was known as Fields. Now, Anna Fricke and her fiancé Grant Mattox have taken over the reins, but they assure their customers the transition in ownership will be a seamless one.

“We have retained the same staff and the menu will stay the same,” Mattox said.

The Shores decided to sell the establishment, which also offers a party room on its upper level, due to life changes.

“Dad wanted to retire, and I wanted to go in a different direction with a new career, and I’m also in school,” said Alli Shore. “Dad was the social one, the personality of the place, so it will be different without him.”

Calvin Rockett got its distinctive name from Alli’s great-grandfather.

“His first name was Calvin, and his middle name was Rockett,” she explained.

Mattox will oversee the general operations of the business from day-to-day, while Fricke is in school pursuing a master’s degree in elementary education from Drake University. She is currently employed at Riddle’s Jewelry at the Marshalltown Mall, and at Meredith Corporation in Des Moines.

“Grant and I are both graduates from MHS, and after looking at a few other businesses outside of Marshalltown, looked into Calvin Rockett because we wanted to stay and raise our family here, as well as do what we can to see Marshalltown prosper,” Fricke said.

The menu consists of bar classics such as spinach artichoke dip and onion rings, to pizzas, burgers, salads, wraps and dinner favorites such as steak, seafood and pasta. The facility can seat about 100 people in its upstairs party room, and 100 people in its restaurant, plus there is patio dining.

Calvin Rockett’s kitchen is open Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The bar is open at least one hour later each night. The eatery may be reached at: 641-328-1033 and 641-328-1031.
