Making a home for Monarch butterflies

Marshalltown Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Val Ruff, center, is pictured Thursday explaining to volunteers how a butterfly garden will be built on the south side of the Fisher Community Center during United Way’s Day of Caring. Ruff said the effort was in tandem

with similar initiatives by Marshalltown Parks & Recreation and the Marshall County Conservation Board to install and enhance Monarch butterfly habitats. Once mounds of dirt are moved at the site, several varieties of plants favorable to butterflies and bees will be installed.

The tentative date for completion is Oct. 20. Helping Ruff were volunteers from the local Wells Fargo Bank and Marshalltown Community College. The United Way Day of Caring is an annual event which directs volunteers to important causes.
