Paramedic Jim Hicklin and EMT K.C. Tuttle were in for a surprise when they were dispatched to Melbourne late Friday night. Little did they know that by the end of their trip, they were going to deliver their first baby in the field for UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown.

UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown, formerly known as Central Iowa Healthcare, received a call late Friday night to transport Chelsea Kasal, of Melbourne, to the Birth Center at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown. Also receiving a phone call that night was Becky Fricke, neighbor to the Kasal’s and an off duty UnityPoint Health- Marshalltown OBGYN nurse. After being assisted by Melbourne EMS, Fricke, Tuttle and Hicklin, Kasal was able to make it as far as the back of the ambulance before the baby boy was ready to make his debut.

Proud parents Randall and Chelsea Kasal welcomed the newest addition to their family, Conrad Randall Kasal at 12:38 a.m. on Oct. 21. Conrad was 6 pounds, 3 ounces and measured in at 20 inches long. He joins his two older sisters, Kielly and Ruth.

“This was our first experience of being in the field and bringing a new baby into the world since becoming UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown.” said Hickin, UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown paramedic. “As a first responder, we were very happy to assist the Kasal family with the healthy arrival of baby Conrad.”
