Back Roads Junk-It Trail starts Friday

Highlights the wares of small-town shops

Grab a map, grab some friends, and be prepared to shop local at the semi-annual Back Roads Junk-It Trail, which takes attendees on a trip down the backroads of Central Iowa (surrounding Marshalltown) to some vintage shops off the beat path, from Oct. 6-8.

“The three-day sale links you up to the little bitty mom and pops shops you may not realize are out there,” said event coordinator Vicky Daters, whose own shop is based in Haverhill. “It’s all about the treasure hunt.”

The route starts as far west as Nevada and as far east as Garwin, south to Colfax and north to Steamboat Rock.

“There are 14 different towns featured and 29 shops total,” Daters said. “It will feature antique, vintage, primitive, retro, rusty, farm fresh goodness and more, in stores that range from brick and mortar to barns.”

Daters noted that with not every shopper being technologically savvy, this season’s Back Roads Junk-It Trail has an “interactive map” feature, available for use online at: in addition to a more tradition map available as a pdf download. The interactive map will give step-by-step instructions on how to get from one stop to the other.

While each store on the trail has its own normal business hours, they will all be open during the trail hours, which are: Oct. 6: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Oct. 7: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Oct. 8: noon to 4 p.m. Some stores will offer additional on-site vendors.
