A warm gesture

Marshalltown Rotarian Carrie Barr, back to camera, prepares to hand a box of winter coats to a Marshalltown fireman Monday at the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA as fellow Rotarians Todd Steinkamp and Erin McGregor look on. It was all part of a concerted effort by the club in raising more than $5,500 to provide 336 warm coats for children in the community. As it has in past years, the club participated in “Operation Warm” project along with other clubs in Rotary District 6000. Thanks to generous contributions from members and some club funds, the group was able to meet the need projected by community organizations. Every school in the Marshalltown Community School District received coats, as well as St. Francis Catholic School and Child Abuse Prevention Services. Schools were contacted in September to determine their needs and then club members were challenged to raise funds. Coats were shipped to the Y where club members met to sort them by size and school. The Marshalltown Fire Department and Rotarians delivered coats via fire trucks. Three Rotarians served as co-chairs for the project: Steve Valbracht, Kim Jass-Ramirez and Steinkamp. “We are proud to do our part in meeting an essential need in our community,” said Jass-Ramirez. “Although funding for the coats came from Marshalltown Rotary donations, the project truly was a community-wide effort.”
