Getting ready for Turkey Day

Volunteers at the Salvation Army, located at 107 W. State St., spent Monday afternoon getting ingredients in order for Thursday’s free community meal, which will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A total of 46 turkeys were donated for the meal. Jerry Gratopp, left, owner of Smokin’ G’s, smoked and cooked the turkeys for the occasion, while Dale Baker, right, one of the many volunteers, assisted with the deboning process. The menu will consist of 150 pounds of sweet potato soufflé, 160 pounds of mashed potatoes, 50 gallons of gravy, corn, stuffing, pies donated by Marshalltown High School, plus dinner rolls. In addition to turkey, ham will also be served, in a limited supply. Meals for shut-ins may be arranged by calling the Salvation Army at: 641-753-5236, by Wednesday at noon. Delivery will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
