Water rescue

Shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Marshalltown Fire Department responded to Sand Lake for a reported water rescue. The department responded within three minutes with one engine, one ladder, one rescue boat, and two chief officers. Upon arrival, Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies directed fire department crews to a man located on an island in the middle of Sand Lake. The victim stated he had entered Sand Lake at 10 a.m. with his kayak to do some fishing. During his time on the water, his kayak had capsized and he swam to the shore of the island. The victim also stated he had been stranded on the island for nearly two hours. The man was wearing a personal floatation device and was uninjured. However, he was exhibiting signs of mild hypothermia. The MFD deployed the rescue boat, and transported the victim to the shore. Unity Point-Marshalltown Paramedics, also at the scene, then transported the man to the emergency department for evaluation.
