Three generations of military service is represented at the American Legion Post 46 in Marshalltown. William L. McLain of Marshalltown, a Vietnam War veteran, mailed an American flag to his grandson, William Everett Zachery “Zack” McLain, who served during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Freedom Sentinel in Afghanistan. Zack flew the flag and carried it with him at two locations and on more than 100 combat missions. After returning home, Zack McLain, along with his grandfather, presented the flag to members of the American Legion Riders. Pictured from left, William L. McLain, Zach McLain, and Riders members Mike Ball, Kevin Huseboe and Pat Petit. Not pictured is William Scott McLain, William L. McLain’s son and Zack’s father. Scott McLain served in the Iowa National Guard — he previously presented an Iowa flag that was flown in Desert Storm with the 1034th Quartermaster Supply Unit. That flag is on display at the post
