Having fun in the cold

Sixth Annual Chamburrrrr Scurry 5k run/walk slated for Saturday

“It’s sort of silly to think of running a 5k in the cold of winter.”

Despite it possibly seeming silly, Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lynn Olberding said the Sixth annual Chamburrrrr Scurry 5k run/walk will continue a tradition of getting people out of their houses and running in January.

“We have people who have participated in the event every year,” she said. “People like that it’s a fun winter activity.”

This year’s event is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Marshalltown Community College campus, and is sponsored by Iowa Valley Continuing Education. People of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.

“The event supports the general programs and initiatives of the Chamber,” Olberding said.

With the run/walk entering its sixth year, she said it started in connection with Chamber initiatives.

“We decided it was a great way to support the Chamber’s quality of life initiatives at the time and provide an opportunity that was open to the public,” she said, adding the timing early in the year is good for those looking to get in shape. “At the beginning of the year, people are thinking about health and fitness.”

Awards will be presented to the top overall male and female. Additionally, the top male and female from each age category will be given a medal; the age groups are 18 years old and younger, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over.

“We are giving $25 in Chamber Bucks to each of the overall winners,” Olberding said.

Entrants will gather in Dejardin Hall for the award ceremony following the race.
