Hello 2018: It’s a boy!

First baby born in the new year has arrived

The first baby born in 2018 in Marshalltown is Maddox Edmond Howard Wren who entered the world on New Year’s Day at 8:08 p.m. at UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown. His proud parents Chelsie and Steven Wren have one other child, a son Conner, who is 18 months old.

Chelsie and Steven Wren started 2018 with the birth of their second child, a son named Maddox Edmond Howard Wren, who entered the world on New Year’s Day at 8:08 p.m. at UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown — the first local baby born in the new year.

Maddox weighed in at seven pounds, 14 ounces with a length of 21 inches.

When Chelsie didn’t delivery her baby on the expected due date — Friday, Dec. 29 — she decided to take some friends’ advice.

“I was told eating pizza would [speed up the process],” Chelsie said. “So I ordered a taco pizza from Zeno’s on Sunday night to see if it worked.”

Whether it was the pizza or just luck, labor began early the next morning.

“From the start of contractions to when he came, was about 17 hours,” she said.

The couple said their son’s name has special meaning. Edmond is the name of Chelsie’s stepfather and Howard was the middle name of her grandfather. As for the first name of Maddox, Chelsie said she just wanted to go with a distinctive sounding name.

“We also gave two special family middle names to our older son, Conner, who is 18 months old,” Steven said.

Chelsie is a stay-at-home mom while Steven works at Preferred Cartage Services.

“We’re overjoyed,” Steven said.

As is the tradition of the hospital, a gift basket of goodies was presented to the new parents.
