The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to an early morning fire Tuesday at 908 S. 2nd Ave. on a report of a house fire. On arrival shortly before 1 a.m., MFD personnel found smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Crews made entry into the home and discovered a fire in a corner of the living room and quickly extinguished the flames. Upon removal of a section of wall above the fire area, it was determined the fire had extended up the wall and into the attic, MFD Chief David Rierson said. Sections of the ceiling were removed and the fire extinguished. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire, however some remodeling was under way on the inside. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $15,000. The fire remains under investigation.
