Second house fire in one day

The Marshalltown Fire Department responded to a second house fire on the same day.

According to the MFD, at 8:06 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to 537 N. 2nd St. for a reported house fire. On arrival, the MFD observed smoke coming from the eaves of the building. The homeowner was on scene and stated everyone was out of the residence. Crews made entry into the home and found fire on the first floor near a stairway leading to the upper floor. Portions of the wall and ceiling were removed to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $13,000. An investigation determined the fire to be electrical in nature.

This was the second fire in Marshalltown on Tuesday

Earlier that morning, firefighters responded to a house fire at 908 S. 2nd Ave.

Crews there made entry into the home and discovered a fire in a corner of the living room and quickly extinguished the flames. Upon removal of a section of wall above the fire area, it was determined the fire had extended up the wall and into the attic. The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire, however some remodeling was under way on the inside. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $15,000. That fire remains under investigation.
