Local man arrested for domestic assault

An argument between a man and woman escalated into a disturbance resulting in the man being arrested by Marshalltown Police earlier this week.

MPD Capt. Brian Batterson said Joseph Martinez, 18, was arrested after officers responded to a call at a residence in the 500 block of North Center Street.

After a conversation with a female, Martinez allegedly went inside and allegedly broke items while doing damage in the residence. The victim went inside, and arguing continued. “The suspect wrapped his hands around her neck, pressing on it which prevented the victim from breathing,” said Batterson. “She did not require any medical attention on scene, and Martinez was later arrested without incident.”

Martinez was charged with domestic abuse/assault impeding fow of air/blood strangulation and released under the supervision by the Department of Corrections. Marshall County District Court Magistrate Kevin O’Hare issued a no contact order and appointed the state public defender’s office to represent Martinez. His preliminary hearing is set for March 12 at 1 p.m.
